HELP?
I am writing a short paper for a class. It has to be on something that has influenced American Culture, like coca cola. I have chosen to do mine on television. I have several ideas about this and am doing research on it. But I would like your opinion on how television has influenced the American culture. Thanks in advance.
Also, to all my friends who are taking classes, how do you document a web page as a source? I hated doing it for books so this is not easy for me. Thanks again.

I think television has influenced the American culture in a big way. We depend on it for alot of reasons, to "babysit" children when you have other obligations that you need to do and get done around the house. Alot of people revolve their lives around the television and what they can and can not do in a day because it might interfere with their primetime shows. But also televison cam bring families together, they have a family night and all gather in front of the tv to watch their favorite shows. Its made us all around lazier. We depend on it wayyy to much then we should.
Hopefully this site will help you in siting your paper.

There are two different types of citation that I know of MLA and AP do you know which style your professor prefers? It is usually in the syllabus. I use the link provided by the professor in the syllabus that way I don't get it mixed up. Jeff's professors provide different citing criteria.
I believe that before television was an integral part of our lives, time moved very slowly. Remember when you were a kid how long a day was or how long a summer vacation was? Now everything goes by so quickly we lose years in a blink of an eye because we never just sit, we always have tv to babysit us when we are not busy.
I also think it closes us off from our neighbors, since we aren't playing outside or siting on the front porch. And we as a community volunteer less. According to my 80 year old aunt, the evenings used to be a time when people went to church or a central location to do something for the poor, like knit socks or make quilts.
The bigget way I have seen TV influence our lives, is the lack of exercise children are getting. Our entertainment used to be getting together on an empty lot in the neighborhood and playing games like, softball, tug of war, red rover, red rover, etc...Also, I think it has descentitized (sp) us to violence. Someone getting shot is shown in living color on our TV news bulletins. Seems just like the way life is to some of our children, so they see no consequences for their actions. (It is just entertainment)..Instead of family game night, we tend to sit our children in front of the TV so we can go about all the things we think are more important than spending time with them. The "family" in general has been compromised.
I think it's had a negative influence with all the violence on TV. Of course there are positives like entertainment. I can't remember how to document a web resource. There's that book that shows you how, but I can't remember it's name. I would search the internet. It's been too long... 3 years!
Okay, I'll say a positive effect television has had on our culture, even though I don't watch very much tv at all. Sometimes television news is the only information people hear about what is going on outside of their families and their day-to-day lives. Without television news, people wouldn't know as much about the economic crisis, our involvement in foreign affairs, local, state and federal lawmakers' actions, or even what's going on in the next town. With the introduction of satellite radio, I bet some people never hear a news broadcast on the radio unless that is what they are seeking to hear on talk radio or otherwise. There, that's my two cents.
